A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE

Dr.H.P.CHHETRIHistory does not have a phone number, nor does it have reception day. It is a process of which you catch the suitable moment and act as an honest person should. The people at Rhenock of 1950’s were illiterate thus exploited. My father, late Damber Singh Chhetri, used to tell me to teach the people only to write their names. Learning to write one’s name was easier than knowing the whole alphabets. In brief, it was a revolutionary idea packed in an easily soluble and digestible capsule. It was his dream to see a conscious society that inspired me from within to work for the promotion of education in the society and his cause for justice always guided me to be a step ahead of the flock. For I know that without the light of education, the economy cannot progress which is the only objective in the universe.

The opportunity for higher education was limited then and beneficiaries were confined to few families. It pained me always to find a good number of boys/girls discontinuing schools every year due to seemingly known reasons. At Fiveways a voluntary group of academicians was formed to counsel and guide those dropout students on the inevitability of education in one’s life. Thus many students, who could have ended as socially condemned unwanted elements, have been encourage to achieve educational qualifications and to lead a happy and a socially useful life. The beginning of Open schooling system during the second half of 1980’s helped me a lot in my mission. Since then about 1000 students take admission in class X and XII every year. Friends, education is not only a means for acquiring knowledge but also a tool for rendering social values and engaging in socially useful activities. Rapid growth of students at the school levels, however, created a bottle neck situation considering the inadequate number of institution of higher learning, both in general and professional categories, in the State. In 1990, I started a two year Diploma course in Pharmaceutical Sciences with 60 intakes. The experiment was a complete success which, in other words, also became an obligation to march ahead. On the advice of the well-wishers, we took a bold decision to start a degree college in Pharmacy in 1997 at Fiveways building. In 2000 the Pharmacy College was shifted to a more serene, academically congenial and spacious site at Majhitar, Rangpo, Sikkim. Now, it has become a full-fledged college of national and international reputation. It is affiliated with University of North Bengal and recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India and All India Council for Technical Education. In 2005 post graduate courses and PhD. Programme were begun with the approval of the AICTE and affiliated with University of North Bengal along with a state of the art laboratory facility for pursing research works. The focus on research based education is intended to maintain the quality of our students at par with international standard. It gives me immense satisfaction to see successful accomplishment of the AICTE sponsored research project and publication of research articles in both national and international journals of esteemed value. The institute is yet to go a long way to achieve its goal. The major task of its future plan is to develop an international recognized centre for excellence of Pharmaceutical Education & research in the North East region.
